More pressure isn’t always better. And “no pain, no gain” is a definite fallacy when it comes to massage. If you’re asking the therapist to go deeper, you may not be able to fully relax and we might well be working against your body.
This doesn’t mean we cannot be firm but pain isn’t always just about “tight” muscles. Deliberate and specific, work guided by a detailed knowledge of soft tissues, is more powerful than steam rolling the body.
And often, the real culprit is weakness, imbalance or nervous system dysregulation. Everyone is different, so what worked for one person will not work for the next.
It is about working with nervous system to help the body feel safe enough to relax. Soft tissues release because we create an environment where the nervous system can let go, and only then will the parasympathetic system kick in and your body start to recover.
